Fiberglass Welding Blankets
A welding blanket is a piece of safety equipment designed to protect equipment, the welder and bystanders during welding. The blanket is designed to maintain structural integrity even when contacted by molten metal. Whilst it is obviously useful while welding it is appropriate to use to protect against any process that generates heat and/or fire, e.g. grinding and cutting.
Welding blankets come in a variety of different materials of construction, sizes and functions. For this reason it is important to consider your requirements before purchasing and investigate the details of each product to see if they meet your needs.
Nowadays fiberglass is the most common material used to construct a welding blanket but it wasn't always the case - asbestos was previously used extensively but this has been phased out due to the danger to health from this material. Fiberglass blankets come in a variety of different coatings. Other materials that you might find used include leather or felt.
Fiberglass is particularly well suited to use in welding blankets because it has a very high melting temperature. A drawback with fiberglass is it can shed small particles that can irritate the skin and for this reason a special coating is applied to eliminate this problem.
In regards to functions it is important to check if the blanket was designed to be used in both horizontal and vertical positions. This is because horizontal surfaces require more heat protection than vertical surfaces.
