Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA) or more commonly know as Stick Welding is one of the most common types of arc welding. Stick welding involves the use of an electric current to strike an arc between the workpiece and a consumable electrode rod or 'stick'. MMA electrodes have a solid metal wire core and a flux coating that produces a protective gas around the weld area and provides a protective slag cover over the weld area as it cools. A chipping hammer can be used to remove the slag and a wire brush to prepare the area for any further welding. It is critical to match the electrode type to the metal being welded and ewelders can supply a range of different electrode types.
